Default Role of the Ranger

PLEASE READ BEFORE RESPONDING:

I'm not here to ask how good or how bad rangers are, just a simple question that's been bugging me for a while.

If YOU'RE forming a group, and you do want a Ranger in it (so if you form Rangerless groups, don't respond to say so), what do you have that Ranger for?

Is (s)he just for 2 or 3 Spirits that can benefit the team? A poison spreader? A DPS'er (heh)? An Anti-caster? What do Rangers do for the group?

Interrupter and consistent damage output. Interrupts and then kills casters. I would not use them for pets, spirits, or support.

Alright, to restate the question:

I don't know want to know what Rangers are doing, I want to know what TEAM LEADERS (in Tombs) want Rangers for.

rangers kill mesmers so your Eles can cast all the spells without being disturbed.
rangers can build outposts, no other class can.

I pick one ranger for rituals, one for mass poison, and one pet ranger for energy draining.

To cause as much damage on opponents as possible, and to stay alive for as long as possible. Why should the expectation for a ranger be any different from a warrior or an elementalist?

You need to know what a ranger is good for to decide on their role. They do more physical damage and have better physical resistance than elementalists. They can inflict more conditions and have better elemental resistance than a warrior. So whatever you ask your warriors and elementalists to kill, rangers can do it just as well.

in pugs, i dont know. i mean, we play ranger builds ourselves, but that's the difference, we have builds. pugs dont. i havent join many pugs, so i dont know, maybe team leaders should offer to try builds with there pugs, so it's more organized. everyone knows there role. the problem then is seeing if your pug has the skills/runes unlocked.

Does that one have 12+ in both Beast Mastery (for Fertile Season/Energizing Wind/Symbyosis) and Wilderness Survival (for everything else)?

When I form groups (usually I do PUGs), i like to get a disruption ranger with fertile season (only used when we are controlling the hill in a KoH map).

a very general question...but has a very long answer since the possibilities of that each profession can generally do is endless considering their secondary professions. Rangers though we be found either doing ranged attacks and setting traps usually, but if u ever fine me...which u wont since i make my testing characters named Lo Lo Lo... if u see me with that name dont expect me to do something normal.

Rangers are pretty versatile but they typically mix dps and interupts/conditions. Sort of a jack or all trades if you will, not a warrior and yet not a mesmer. I'm not really knowledgeable enough to talk about traps and spirits

traps are overrated as well as spirts(most)
example- dust trap 25 mana for some damage and blinding over 6-8secs..to me thats not worth it, other traps like barbed are ok.

sprits Effect EVERY creature within its radious.

i think that pets are more effective to distract and annoy the aposing players.
who said 2v1 wasnt fair?

I personally don't care what the rangers in my group are set up for. Probably the biggewst problem is that you have to coordinate tactics with a spirit spammer or trapper.

About the only thing rangers can do is use their interupts and mix it with mesmer interupts and pwr denial IMO.

Rangers are the only class that can change the entire battlefield. Why so few groups harness this power is beyond me.

I played you all this weekend in the HoH when I teamed with TIS. It was an interesting stalemate until the third team came in and very intelligently left me alive so they could finish up what my putrid chains didn't. If anyone doesn't believe that spirits can dominate conventional builds and strategies, you need to play KCHS. I have to say that my team rolled over a couple knockoff builds that didn't use enough spirits. GG!
